When can a student residence permit be converted to a work permit?
- When your student residence permit is still valid.
- You can apply to convert your student residence permit to a work or freelance permit at any time of the year.
- If you are studying in university, master’s, or doctoral programs, you can apply even before graduating.
- If you are enrolled in one-year or technical courses, you must have completed the course first.
- It is recommended to submit the conversion request before the permit expires, but even in case of delay, in some cases it is possible to have the application reviewed and the permit converted.
What other types of residence can a student residence be converted into?
According to Italian immigration laws, the Permesso di soggiorno per motivi di studio (student residence permit) can be converted into several other types of permits, provided you meet the necessary conditions for each type and apply within the legal timeframe. The most important convertible types are 5:
Work residence
Self-employment residence permit
Job Seeker Residence Permit
Startup entrepreneurship residence permit
Family residence permit
Convert to work residence (lavoro subordinato)
Necessary conditions
- The offered job must be formal and its working hours must be at least 20 hours per week.
- Having a valid student residence permit or one that is in the process of being renewed.
- Suitable accommodation (rental agreement or proof of residence with an Ospitalità declaration).
- The employer must be able to register a work contract with you.
- The proposed salary must comply with the legal minimum wage in Italy (for a minimum of 20 hours per week, the annual salary in the contract must be at least 8,500 euros).
Application procedures
- Online application submission on the Ministry of the Interior portal (Prefettura) using SPID or CIE.
- Application review by the Prefettura (Single Desk) of the province of residence.
- Receiving an appointment with the Prefettura to sign the work contract and obtain the work permit kit.
- Submitting the complete documents with the special kit to the post office for the issuance of the new work residence permit.
- Receiving the new work residence permit card.
Note: In most cases for a work permit, both the applicant and the employer must be present at the time of the appointment with the Prefettura.
Required Documents: Usually, documents fall into 3 main categories:
First category: Personal documents
- Valid passport
- SPID or CIE
- Valid student residence permit or one in the process of renewal
- Identity card
- Codice Fiscale card
- Revenue stamp (marca da bollo) worth 16 euros
Second category: Proof of living
- Proof of residence (rental agreement or OSPITALITA’)
- Proof of registration of the rental contract with the Agenzia delle Entrate
- Certificate of suitability of accommodation (Idoneità Alloggiativa)
- Deed of assignment of building (Cessione di Fabbricato) document
Third category: Work and employer documents
- Proposed work contract (with job details and working hours)
- Employer information: name and surname of the responsible person, company address, phone, and email
- Documents: VISURA CAMERALE and INAIL registration and INPS registration
- Employer’s identity documents such as their identity card
Conversion to self-employment residence (Lavoro Autonomo) - Partita IVA.
Necessary conditions
- You must define your business activity plan and provide documents proving your ability to carry it out.
- You must have sufficient and documented income to cover your living expenses in Italy (around 27,000 euros per year).
- Depending on the type of activity, you may need to register for tax purposes or obtain professional licenses.
- Registration with the Chamber of Commerce.
Application procedures
- Opening a Partita IVA and obtaining a Nulla Osta from the Chamber of Commerce of your city of residence.
- Preparation of all necessary three categories of documents (personal documents – accommodation documents – work documents).
- Online application submission on the Ministry of the Interior portal (Prefettura) using SPID or CIE.

Job Seeker Residence Permit (Permesso per attesa Occupazione)
Who is this type of residence card suitable for?
- University graduates: Someone who has completed their studies at one of Italy's accredited universities or higher education institutions can extend their residence permit for up to one year to have the opportunity to find a job or start a business.
- Unemployed individuals: Foreigners who hold an Italian work residence permit but have lost their job can obtain this type of residence permit for one year to have the opportunity to find a job.
Conditions for this permit for graduated students
- Completion of studies at an official Italian level (Bachelor's, Master's, PhD, or technical-vocational).
- Registration with the employment agency (ANPAL) or the Employment Center (Centro per l'impiego).
- Submission of documents related to graduation and proof of financial means.
Converting a student residence permit to a job seeker residence permit.
- Valid passport
- Student Permesso di soggiorno (valid or in renewal)
- Graduation certificate or diploma from the university
- Proof of financial means (around 6,000 euros is recommended)
- Health insurance (for at least one year)
- Official registered residence (Residenza)
